Earlier on Thursday, England indicated May was likely to be unavailable for the Six Nations because of a "significant" knee injury that required an operation.

May sustained the setback during Gloucester's 39-39 Premiership draw with Harlequins last month.

And Gloucester confirmed on their Twitter account: "Following an operation on his left knee on Tuesday. Jonny May will be ruled out of the remainder of the 2015/16 campaign."

The 25-year-old - who has been capped 19 times by his country - started three of England's four games as they crashed out of the Rugby World Cup in the pool stage.

May has six tries for England in his international career and 50 in 121 appearances for Gloucester.
