The President said this at the 2017 Innovation Prize for Africa Awards hosted in Ghana.

He announced the establishment of a technology commercialisation unit in the country.

He explained that this will ensure that the seeming gap between industry and academia in the innovation sector is bridged.

In addition, he further disclosed that efforts are being made to triple the allocation for research within the medium to long term to drive the growth of innovation in Ghana.

The 2017 edition of the Innovation Prize for Africa had over 2,500 nominations across Africa.

After several scrutiny the number was reduced to the final ten nominees who were awarded for their ingenuity.

A 58 year old Egyptian Aly El-Shafei, won the overall prize of 100,000 dollars.

Philippa NgajuMakobore from Uganda was the 2nd winner. She received a cash prize of 25,000 dollars for her project which controls the fluid flow in the administration of infusion.

The recipient for social impact, Dougbeh Chris Nyan of Liberia also received 25,000 dollars.

Meanwhile each of the remaining seven nominees received a voucher of 5,000 dollars.
