CJ Stander can play a further part in Ireland's Test series in South Africa, but a one-week ban rules him out of the second contest.

Ireland back-rower CJ Stander will miss Saturday's second Test against South Africa after being hit with a one-week ban following his red card in the opening match.

Joe Schmidt's men made history by beating the Springboks 26-20 in Cape Town last weekend to earn Ireland's first win on South African soil.

Ireland were forced to do things the hard way when Stander was sent off after jumping into Pat Lambie when the fly-half got a kick away in the 23rd minute.

South Africa-born Stander has subsequently been handed with a one-week suspension, meaning he is unavailable to face South Africa in Johannesburg this weekend.

However, he will return for the final match of the series in Port Elizabeth on June 25.

After the match, Schmidt had spoken of his displeasure at Stander's red, claiming the forward could do little to avoid contact.

"I thought the red card was very, very harsh to be honest. CJ's got both hands extended, once you're in the air you can't change your trajectory," he said.
