Knowing a strong opening round was likely to be needed after reigning champion Jordan Spieth - one of the earlier starters - surged clear at the top of the leaderboard, Day eagled Augusta's second hole.
A stunning approach shot from 257 yards set up Day's three at the par five and lifted the Australian into contention almost immediately.
With swirling winds expected to strengthen throughout Thursday, Day faced a challenge to match the pace set by Spieth, last year's wire-to-wire winner.
Spieth was five under with three holes to play, three clear of his nearest rivals, including Day.
