Lewis Hamilton to start last at Chinese Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton will start from last place at the Chinese Grand Prix after failing to post a time during qualifying on Saturday due to a power issue.

The double defending Formula One world champion has seen Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg win both of the opening races of 2016, and he could fall further behind the German in the standings after dropping out in Q1.

With F1 returning to last year's qualifying, there was high drama from the off following heavy rain in Shanghai, the session was initially red flagged after Manor's Pascal Wehrlein went through a patch of standing water with DRS open and spun into a wall on the pit straight.

That caused Q1 to be delayed by around 20 minutes, and when the action got back under way, Hamilton failed to post a time as Mercedes struggled to solve a power problem that had limited him in Saturday's practice session.

However, the reigning champion was undeterred by the setback, vowing to do everything he could to be in contention for Sunday's race.

"You can overtake here, tyres don't last as well so it perhaps not as simple as it was in that race [Hungary 2014, when Hamilton finished third from the pit lane] but I'll give it everything to get up there," he told Sky Sports.

"It [the car] is quick so hopefully they get the issue fixed and we can actually have a race tomorrow."
