Lorenzi becomes oldest first-time champion on ATP Tour

Paolo Lorenzi recorded a straight-sets victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Generali Open final to become the oldest first-time winner on the ATP World Tour.

Lorenzi won 6-3 6-4 in Kitzbuhel on Saturday, earning a maiden title at the age of 34 years and seven months.

The veteran Italian proved particularly successful behind his first serve, winning 90 per cent of points as his opponent struggled to make an impression.

Lorenzi broke in the opening game and enjoyed further success on Basilashvili's serve to take a one-set lead.

The first Georgian to make an ATP final, Basilashvili showed character to get back on level terms after falling 3-1 down in set two.

However, he was then broken again when serving to stay in the match, enabling Lorenzi to celebrate a long-awaited triumph.
