MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo wants Movistar Yamaha to begin contract negotiations before the start of the 2016 season or risk losing him.

Lorenzo's current deal expires at the end of the season and he is keen to extend his stay with the team he has exclusively ridden for since his MotoGP debut in 2008.

The Spaniard claimed his third title last season after seven race wins gave him 330 points, five more than team-mate Valentino Rossi.

However, he has hinted his association with Yamaha could come to an end if the team do not act fast.

"I want to renew my contract before the start of the season," he told Spanish broadcaster Movistar. "But if not I'll just keep quiet and trust in myself.

"If we cannot find an agreement we will have to wait till Mugello [in May] or even Brno [August], just like other years.

"I have no hurry, especially since I am confident in my ability.

"I know I'm going fast and hopefully with Yamaha, but I'll still be fast if I have to do it with another bike.

"My goal remains to retire with Yamaha without changing teams and try to match the four titles Valentino has, or even surpass that.

"But it's true, renewing before the start of the world championship would take away some pressure and anxiety you as a rider may have when not knowing what the future holds."
