President John Dramani Mahama has announced that 700 housing units at the stalled Saglemi Affordable Housing Project are expected to be completed by March 2027, with the remaining units targeted for completion by the end of the year.

Speaking at the project site, President Mahama said the developer is expected to deliver 1,500 completed housing units by December 2027.

“As the developer said, 700 units by March next year we'll be able to commission and another 1000, actually a total of 1500 by end of next year, by December next year,” he said.

The President said the revived project would provide housing for workers and families in the area, particularly as industrial activity expands around the Tema-Dawa corridor.

He said the government expects strong demand for the houses because of the industries operating around Tema and the Dawa Industrial Park.

“If people don't register fast enough, you see all these industries here all the way to Tema, those in the industrial area, Dawa industrial area. They will snap up all the houses for their workers,” Mahama said.

The Saglemi project was initiated in 2012 with the original plan to construct 5,000 affordable housing units but the project became entangled in controversy. The project was eventually left incomplete and without the basic services needed to make the houses habitable.

According to President Mahama, the prolonged stoppage created another problem where parts of the estate were stripped of fittings and electrical components.

“Looters came in. And stole everything, the cables, the washbasins, the baths, all the fittings, electricals, bulbs. They even took the telecom cables from underground and pulled them away and took them. And so they just left an empty shell,” he said.

The government is now in a partnership with a private developer to complete the estate and provide the infrastructure needed for occupation.
