The 27-year-old rose as high as fifth in the world during last season after three tournament victories, but he was unable to improve on his 2014 performances at the majors.

Two years ago, Fowler finished in the top five of all four majors and big things were expected of him, however he struggled in 2015 – a 12th-place finish at The Masters his best result.

In the meantime Spieth, Day and McIlroy have been able to establish themselves as the top three players in the world, a group Fowler hopes to one day join.

"I feel like to be in the same conversation I need to get a major and get that on the resume to at least have some sort of credentials to be there," Fowler was quoted as saying by The Golf Channel

"I'm just looking forward to working on being the best that I can be. The ultimate goal is to be the best player in the world. I obviously have some pretty tough competition out there."

Fowler hopes his 2016 season will be a mixture of his past two campaigns, leading to his maiden victory in a major.

He added: "I think a combination of the two years, going with how I was able to hang around and get some top finishes in the majors in '14 and the last year to go out and get the wins.

"You put those two together, and we win a major this year."
