Max Verstappen stunned by Spanish Grand Prix win
An ecstatic Max Verstappen was stunned after becoming the youngest driver to win a Formula One race on his Red Bull debut in a dramatic Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.
Mercedes were expected to secure yet another one-two at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, but championship leader Nico Rosberg and team-mate Lewis Hamilton crashed out after colliding on the first lap.
It was Verstappen who took advantage of the absences of the Mercedes duo to make history at the age of 18, just 10 days after he was promoted from Toro Rosso at the expense of Daniil Kvyat.
The teenager also becomes the first Dutchman to win an F1 race, the youngest points-scorer, race leader and podium-finisher in the sport.
"It feels amazing. I can't believe it, it was a great race," said Verstappen.
"I have to say thank you to the team for giving me such a great car. To win in the first race is such an amazing feeling. My dad [ex-F1 driver Jos] helped me a lot to achieve this, this is amazing."
Verstappen's strategy, which included a marathon last stint on the medium compound tyre, gave him the advantage, with team-mate Daniel Ricciardo eventually retiring from fourth with a puncture late on after being in front following Hamilton and Rosberg's smash.
Ferrari duo Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel were second and third respectively as Red Bull claimed their first victory since the Belgium Grand Prix two years ago.
Verstappen's victory sees him break the previous record held by Vettel, who was 21 when he won the Italian Grand Prix in 2008.
