Now in its 10th year, the Melcom Blood Donation Exercise has become a life-giving tradition. Since its inception, the initiative has collected an impressive 8,514 pints of blood—each one potentially saving a life, comforting a family, or sustaining a critically ill patient in dire need.

This year’s campaign, themed “Remember, Someone needs you to live”, will span a wide network of donation sites, including four senior high schools, 30 selected Melcom branches nationwide, and four major shopping malls in Accra.

Celebrating a Decade of Dedication

At the launch event, Mrs. Sophia Blankson, Deputy Chief Blood Donor Recruitment Officer at the National Blood Service, praised Melcom’s unwavering dedication over the years.

“For over a decade, Melcom has not only opened its doors but also its heart to the cause of voluntary blood donation,” she said. “They’ve worked closely with us to reach thousands of donors and make donation sites more accessible and well-equipped. It’s a partnership rooted in compassion and patriotic service to humanity.”

Mrs. Blankson emphasized the critical importance of corporate involvement in public health, especially in sustaining the country’s blood bank during emergencies and surgical needs.

Beyond Blood: Supporting Health Nationwide

Melcom’s contributions to Ghana’s health sector don’t stop at blood donations. Through its charitable wing, the Melcom Care Foundation, the company has donated 45 medical-grade blood and vaccine refrigerators to 39 health institutions across the country in the last four years.

“This support has gone a long way in strengthening cold-chain storage capacity and improving health service delivery in underserved communities,” Mr. Sadhwani added.

The Melcom Care Foundation: Giving with Purpose

Founded in 2013, the Melcom Care Foundation embodies the social heart of the Melcom Group. Focused primarily on health and education, the foundation operates with a vision to foster a deeper sense of belonging and social wellbeing in the communities where Melcom does business.

“Our foundation is not just about charity—it’s about meaningful engagement and long-term impact,” said Mr. Sadhwani. “We want every Ghanaian to know they matter, and that we are here not only to serve but to stand with them.”

A Call to Action

As the 2025 Blood Donation Drive begins, Melcom and the National Blood Service are inviting Ghanaians everywhere to take part in this noble mission. Whether you’re a first-time donor or a seasoned participant, your pint of blood could be someone’s lifeline.

“It takes just a few minutes to give blood, but it could mean a lifetime for someone else,” Mrs. Blankson reminded the public.
