Whether in San Diego or Los Angeles, Mike McCoy will return for a fourth season at the helm of the Chargers.

The San Diego Chargers could be playing in a new city next season, but they will have the same head coach after under-fire Mike McCoy was retained.

President of football operations John Spanos confirmed on Monday that McCoy will be in charge for a fourth season despite a disappointing 2015 campaign in which they went 4-12 in the NFL.

"I have the utmost confidence in our leadership," Spanos wrote in a letter posted on the team's website.

"[General manager] Tom Telesco, Mike McCoy, and I have already begun evaluating every aspect of the team to take the essential steps to put a winning product back on the field.

"We will waste no time in making the necessary changes."

The Chargers were thought to be a playoff contender this season and were a popular pick to win the AFC West. Instead they finished the season with a 4-12 record following Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Denver Broncos.

McCoy led the team to a 9-7 finish in each of his first two seasons, and they won a playoff game in 2013.

However, the Chargers were largely one-dimensional, relying on the right arm of Philip Rivers to carry the offense. But San Diego had hoped to change that this year, selecting Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon in the first round.

Gordon had a record-setting season at Wisconsin in 2014, but multiple injuries to San Diego's offensive line caused the ground game to suffer in his rookie year.

Gordon ran for just 641 yards on 184 carries with 33 catches for another 192 yards. But after rushing for 4,915 yards and 45 career touchdowns, including 2,587 yards and 29 scores last year, Gordon failed to find the end zone before having his season end with a knee injury.

McCoy will be granted another chance to find some answers, though, carrying a 22-26 record with the team into an uncertain offseason.
