Moore gutted by Australia series defeat to England

Australia captain Stephen Moore conceded he was "pretty gutted" after his side lost 23-7 in the second Test in Melbourne on Saturday, suffering their first series defeat at home to England.

Moore's counterpart Dylan Hartley forced his way over the line for a vital try, while Owen Farrell also crossed and kicked a further 13 points as Eddie Jones' men beat the Wallabies again.

Australia had no answers to England's superb defending and a clearly rattled Moore made no excuses for his side's below-par performance at AAMI Park.

"Pretty gutted to be honest, there's not much more to say than that," he told Sky Sports. "We've got to own this loss and be better for next week.

"It's really, really disappointing and I feel for the fans who have come out and supported us, we've just got to front up.

"England deserved to win both Tests and we've just got to get better. They defended really well. We had a lot of ball down their end but we couldn't get over the line at crucial times.

"We had a lot of phases there and couldn't get it over so that's disappointing but they're the moments that matter and we didn't win enough of those tonight."

Moore was unable to explain why his team were so poor, with Michael Cheika's men now facing a whitewash if England win next weekend's third Test in Sydney.

"I think we made a fair few errors in attack so that was disappointing and we probably didn't build pressure at crucial times," the Wallabies skipper said.

"To be honest, I just feel pretty gutted about it at the moment. We'll look at the game and be honest about it, we'll own the performance and get better."

Israel Folau said "stupid" mistakes cost Australia as his side crumbled to another defeat at the hands of the Six Nations Grand Slam champions.

"At the start we gave away too many stupid penalties and got up in all that stupid stuff, we can't afford to do that next week," Folau told Sky Sports.

"I thought we were a little bit panicky, need to be a little more composed. Tonight wasn't good enough, credit to England, they played well."
