New allowance will be paid after 2017 Budget is read - NSS

National Service Personnel (NSS) have threatened to demonstrate against the government over its refusal to implement the 60% increment in the allowance of personnel announced by the previous government.

The National Service Secretariat has denied claims by Service personnel that the scheme is refusing to pay the newly approved allowance announced by the previous government.

A statement signed by the Head of public Relations, Ambrose Entsiwah Jnr said the last minute increment announced by the immediate past Mahama administration was not captured in the November 2016 Supplementary Budget.

It said the scheme is therefore not able to work with the upward adjustment for now.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) government before exiting power approved an increase in the allowances of national service personnel from GH¢350 to GH¢559.

The increment of the service personnel took effect January 1, 2017.

However, some service personnel who went to the banks for their allowances were left disappointed because there was no increment in their salary.

President of the National Service Personnel Association in the Greater Accra region, Kojo Danquah said the personnel will demonstrate if the government fails to pay them.

But the NSS said the new government is seriously making inputs into the yet-to-be-read March 2017 national budget being prepared by the Ministry of Finance to reflect what has been agreed on.

“Management wishes to state that the scheme remains committed to the wellbeing of National Service Personnel,” the statement added.
