Demo rocks govt over tariff hikes and tax

Workers nationwide have demonstrated to voice their concerns over the Energy Sector Levies Act 2015, as well as hikes in electricity and water tariffs. The demonstration was organised because in all the deliberations organised labour had with the government proved futile but Government however insists the levy is needed to fix the challenges in the energy sector. Speaking to a jeering crowd, Haruna Iddrisu said he had received the Organised Labour petition and would pass it on to President John Mahama. Meanwhile, Courts in Ghana remain shut as Judicial Service staff workers hit the streets to demand for a reduction in utility and fuel prices.

AG, Interior Minister sued over Gitmo detainees

The Attorney General and the Minister of Interior have been dragged to court over government’s decision to host two ex-detainees of the Guantanamo Bay prison in the country. Margaret Banful, a former conference officer at the Foreign Affairs Ministry and one Henry Nana Boakye filed the suit on Monday at the Supreme Court. They are praying the court to declare that the continued stay of Mahmud Umar Bin Atef and Muhammed Salih Al Dhuby unlawful. However, Government has denied breaking the law in allowing two ex-detainees of the Guantanamo Bay prison into the country.

19 NHIA staff interdicted

The management of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has placed 19 staff of the authority on interdiction. It follows a nationwide investigation by the Bureau of National Investigations into some alleged financial malpractices at the scheme. The former boss of the NHIA Sylvester Mensah has become a subject of investigation by the BNI in the past weeks after the president directed a probe into the operations of the scheme.

Hearts of Oak sign Samuel Yeboah

Hearts of Oak have completed the signing of mercurial striker Samuel Yeboah. The 29-year-old signed a two year deal on Tuesday with the Phobians after passing a routine medicals and he is expected to start training with the club on Friday. Yeboah, who was the top scorer in the Ghana and Israeli top-flight leagues before moving to Belgium where he played for Gent.
