Nick Kyrgios marked his 21st birthday by defeating Inigo Cervantes in straight sets to progress to the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open on Wednesday.

Kyrgios finished as runner-up to Richard Gasquet in the 2015 edition and received a bye into the second round this year as the number two seed.

It was not a convincing display from the Australian, but he edged out Cervantes in a tie-break for the first set.

Kyrgios came up with key points when it mattered and he did so again in the second, seeing out a 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 victory before being presented with a birthday cake by the tournament organisers.

The world number 20 will meet Borna Coric in the quarter-finals after the Croatian sent Rogerio Dutra Silva packing with a 6-3 4-6 6-1 win.

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez booked his place in the last eight by overcoming French qualifier Stephan Robert – ranked 69 places below him – 6-3 7-6 (7-3)

Garcia-Lopez's next opponent will be third seed Benoit Paire, but the Frenchman had to work hard to get the better of Kyle Edmund.

The Brit claimed the first set in a tie-break but was unable to build from there, going down 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-3 to world number 21 Paire.

Former world number seven Fernando Verdasco was unable to build upon his triumph in the Nastase Tiriac Trophy as he was comfortably beaten by fellow Spaniard and eighth seed Pablo Carreno Busta 6-1 6-3 in the first round.
