American Fritz took Roger Federer to three sets in Stuttgart this month but failed to produce a display of similar steel against Mannarino.

The Frenchman secured two breaks in each set to see out the match in under an hour and set up a second-round clash with 12th seed Paolo Lorenzi.

Evans lost his first set to wildcard and world number 234 Broady but battled back to see out a 3-6 6-2 7-6 (8-6) triumph – the final set lasting 60 minutes.

Evgeny Donskoy will meet Marcos Baghdatis in the next round after easing past Denis Kudla 6-4 6-4, while Mikhail Youzhny and Teymuraz Gabashvili was suspended following rain.
