Campaign Coordinator of the Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC), Dr. Steve Manteaw has said Ghanaians should expect more uncompleted projects to be commissioned by the government.
He argued that because 2016 is an election year, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is seeking political capital from such commissioning.
“I do not think the factory was entirely ready before it was inaugurated…we are likely to see more projects which have not really reached completion stage will be inaugurated for political capital,” he said during an interview on Radio Ghana.
On Monday, President John Mahama commissioned the rehabilitated Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region and it is expected to create about 7,000 jobs.
However, the Central Regional Minister, Kwaku Rickets Hagan said the factory will be closed down for maintenance, an announcement which has received widespread criticisms from some opposition parties, as well as a cross section of Ghanaians.
The Minority in Parliament has expressed reservations about the factory’s capacity to run efficiently.
According to them the unavailability of sugarcane to feed the factory, unattractive prices for sugarcane produced by farmers and the high cost of irregular electrical power could prevent the factory from running smoothly.
“But I do understand that we are in an election year and we are likely to see more of these rush commissioning of projects when they have actually not reached their fully developed state for commissioning,” he explained
