The Ashanti Regional leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged party members to exercise restraint as it works towards resolving the impasse within the Manhyia North constituency.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party ordered a rerun of all the constituency elections, citing a Supreme Court ruling, which nullified the party’s existing voter's register.
But, party members, including polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, and constituency executives have resisted the move and have warned of bloodbaths if the party’s NEC dares hold the rerun.
In an interview on Radio Ghana, the NPP’s Ashanti Regional General Secretary, Sam Pyne called on party members to remain calm as the executives meet with factions involved in the impasse in order to find an amicable solution towards the matter.
"They should be calm. The party will take decisions that will be in the best interest of the party. We are not looking at individual and partisan interest, but we are looking at what will be in the best interest of the people," he added.
The angry executives over the weekend, clad in red armbands and head gear wielded machetes and stones and chanted war songs to protest the intended re-run.
They argued that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party took that decision because of their selfish interests, and have therefore ordered for proof of the concerned judgment cited as the reason to rerun all elections in the constituency.
