Otumfuo Osei Tutu II leads successful millennium Excellence Awards in Washington, D.C. with Golden Cement as headline sponsor
For the first time in its history the Millennium Excellence Foundation (MEF) has taken its flagship celebration of African and diaspora achievement beyond the continent and a Ghanaian manufacturer has stepped forward to help carry it there.
Golden Cement Ghana Limited the Ningo Prampram-based cement producer known for its state-of-the-art plant and its promise as “Your Foundation for Strength and Excellence in Construction,” has been named headline sponsor of Millennium Excellence Week America 2026, the foundation’s landmark U.S. debut held under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Asantehene of the Ashanti Kingdom.
It is, in many ways, a fitting pairing. One organisation lays the literal foundation for Ghana’s buildings, roads and skylines.
The other has spent over two decades laying the foundation for how the world recognises African excellence.
A Week Built for the Diaspora
Millennium Excellence Week America 2026 ran through the last week of August in Washington, D.C., Arlington, National Harbor and Bowie, Maryland, weaving together sport, scholarship, business and celebration into a single, unmistakably Ghanaian showcase on American soil.
The week opened with the Otumfuo Invitational at the historic Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, where His Majesty struck the ceremonial first ball before a field of Africa-focused investors, family office principals and diaspora business leaders proof, organisers said, that “partnerships actually start” on the fairway as often as in the boardroom.
From there, the programme moved to a Royal Guest Lecture at Howard University, an Africa Business &Investment Summit at MGM National Harbor bringing together government leaders and private capital, and engagements that extended to Bowie State University knitting together education, enterprise and culture across the diaspora corridor.
The week’s centrepiece, the Millennium Excellence Awards Gala, was held at the storied Warner Theatre, where His Majesty and Her Royal Highness Lady Julia, Queen Consort, personally conferred honours on a distinguished slate of laureates. Among them: a posthumous tribute to Reginald F. Lewis, the Baltimore-born financier who built the first Black-owned billion-dollar business in America while quietly investing in Africa’s future long before it was fashionable to do so; and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, honoured with the Global Transformation and Good Governance Prize for his state’s development trajectory and his advocacy for diaspora investment in African infrastructure.
It is a guest list and a mission that Golden Cement Ghana says it was proud to stand behind.
Two Foundations, One Purpose
“For Golden Cement Ghana Limited, supporting this initiative is an investment in Ghana’s reputation, people and future,” the company said. “We are proud to stand with the Millennium Excellence Foundation and His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in celebrating individuals whose achievements have strengthened communities and inspired generations.
We believe Ghana’s future must be built on excellence, innovation, integrity and partnerships that connect the country to Africa and the global diaspora.”
There is an almost poetic symmetry in the partnership. Golden Cement’s Ningo Prampram facility exists to give Ghana’s builders a stronger, more reliable material to work with the literal substance beneath schools, homes, roads and factories from Accra to Kumasi and beyond.
MEF exists to do something structurally similar for African identity: give the continent’s achievers and the diaspora’s, a platform strong enough to hold up their legacies for the next generation to build on.
“As a Ghanaian manufacturer with an African ambition, Golden Cement is committed not only to building enduring structures but also to supporting the people and institutions that provide the foundation for national progress,” the company added. It is a statement that could just as easily describe a bag of cement as it does a royal-patronised foundation now operating out of Washington, Accra and Kumasi alike and that overlap is precisely the point.
What This Means for Ghana
For ordinary Ghanaians the headline sponsorship is more than a logo on a step-and-repeat in Washington. It signals a homegrown industrial player backing the kind of soft-power diplomacy that puts Ghanaian institutions, Ghanaian royalty and Ghanaian ambition on a global stage the Asantehene conferring honours at the Warner Theatre, Ghana’s flag standing shoulder to shoulder with heads of government and diaspora capital at MGM National Harbor.
It is brand-building for Golden Cement yes but it is also nation-building by association, the kind of quiet, sustained visibility that compounds over years rather than news cycles.
And Golden Cement appears to be just getting started. The company has signalled that more visibility, more partnerships, and a fuller public introduction of its brand to the Ghanaian market are on the way.
Golden Cement Ghana Coming Soon.
As Millennium Excellence Week America 2026 draws to a close, one thing is clear: the foundation for a longer conversation between Golden Cement and the excellence economy Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has spent over two decades building has already been poured. What gets built on top of it for Golden Cement and for Ghana is the story to watch next
