The Philadelphia Phillies added some punch to their farm system on Thursday, selecting 18-year-old outfielder Mickey Moniak with the number one overall pick of the 2016 MLB Draft.

Philadelphia's director of scouting, Johnny Almaraz, said La Costa Canyon High School's Moniak has "incredible offensive ability and the potential to be a perennial All-Star".

"I'm just so grateful for this opportunity," Moniak told MLB Network. "I'm so honoured and excited to prove the Phillies right with this pick."

Tennessee third baseman Nick Senzel went second to the Cincinnati Reds.

Ian Anderson, who was in Secaucus, New Jersey, for the draft, was the first pitcher taken when the Atlanta Braves picked the right-hander with the third overall selection.

The Colorado Rockies were next and picked another high school pitcher in Riley Pint, a lanky right-hander from St. Thomas Aquinas in Overland Park, Kansas.

The Milwaukee Brewers, who had three total picks in Thursday's first two rounds, selected Louisville center fielder Corey Ray with the fifth pick.

Including competitive balance picks at the end of each round, there were 77 picks made through the first two rounds of the draft.
