Kevin Pietersen was quick to praise Melbourne Stars' bowling attack despite his match-winning 62 as they reached the Big Bash final for the first time.

Chasing 140 to win, Pietersen produced a brilliant 36-ball knock that gave impetus to the Stars and enabled Mike Hussey and Peter Hanscomb to complete a seven-wicket win.

However, the former England batsman felt the credit for their success should lie with his side's bowling attack.

"It was hugely satisfying," Pietersen said after being named man of the match. "I went out with intent, and to win the game for the team. Luckily it came off.

"It's always nice to perform in big games, but credit has to go to the bowlers for setting it up."

Scorchers captain Adam Voges hailed Pietersen's performance as Perth missed out on a fifth successive Big Bash final appearance.

"We weren't able to contain him and he ended up being the difference," said Voges. "He came in at a pretty (high) pressure situation.

"We bowled really well in those first four overs and he just swung the momentum of the match.

"It's what good players do."

Stars will meet Sydney Thunder in Sunday's final at the MCG.
