Du Plessis delighted as runs finally flow for Proteas
Faf du Plessis says South Africa's resolute batting display on day three of the second Test against England can be the start of their revival after a disappointing 2015.
The Proteas finished last year top of the ICC Test rankings but were humbled 3-0 by India in a four-match series in November and December.
Low scores in both innings saw them beaten comfortably by England in the first Test, but South Africa finally found their feet with the bat on Monday, as Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Du Plessis all scored well.
Captain Amla batted the entire day at Newlands on his way to 157 not out, while De Villiers (88) and Du Plessis (51no) both scored half-centuries – the latter his first in 12 months – as they closed on 353-3, still 276 behind.
"That was massive for us today, getting into the game like we know we can," Du Plessis said. "It was a real solid performance.
"I wish we had some Tipp-Ex so that we can erase that Indian tour. Australia and England lost in those conditions.
"It's been a confidence issue as we lacked the confidence after that tour. This wicket is good and it is important for me to go out there tomorrow and make a big score.
"England have a very experienced attack so we can't go at five or six an over. Our plan is just to bat as long as possible tomorrow and if the rate picks up and the situation changes for us to push for a win, then we will push but for now we just need to bat.
"If we just go out there tomorrow and bat well, it will be a big win for us."
