Toyota looked set to win the 84th edition of the prestigious endurance race for the first time on Sunday until the number five of Kazuki Nakajima lost power at the start of the final lap and Porsche took advantage.

It appeared that Toyota had the race wrapped up until the number five ground to a halt tantalisingly close to the end in a cruel late twist.

Nakajima's TS050 Hybrid was able to cross the line, only to be disqualified for failing to finish the last lap before the six-minute time limit was up.

Neel Jani, Marc Lieb and Romain Dumas were able to celebrate a success in the world famous race, which attracted 263,500 spectators, that looked so unlikely until the closing stages.
