Rafael Nadal is eligible to represent Spain in the Olympic Games in Rio next month after a succeeding with an appeal to the International Tennis Federation.

Rafael Nadal is eligible to represent Spain in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next month after succeeding with an appeal to the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

The 14-time grand-slam champion, winner of Olympic gold in Beijing eight years ago, did not meet the selection criteria as he had not played enough Davis Cup matches for his country.

Nadal appeared on the ITF entry list for the Games despite his lack of Davis Cup action and the world governing body confirmed to Omnisport that the 30-year-old has been cleared to play in Brazil.

There are still doubts over the world number four's participation, though, as he recovers from a wrist injury which forced him to pull out of the French Open and miss Wimbledon.

Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic pulled out of the Olympics on Friday with the Canadian citing health concerns, including the Zika virus.
