Carlos Brathwaite provided some brief entertainment, making 69 off 71 balls including seven fours and four sixes.
Play was interrupted after just three balls and had an impact throughout, but Australia did manage to take the second new ball.
Brathwaite went after James Pattinson (2-67), hitting him for two sixes in three balls, before the paceman cleaned up the all-rounder's off stump.
It was early afternoon when play was interrupted for the final time before the abandonment was called hours later.
