Sabres forward Ryan O'Reilly tied the scores early in the second period, before Derek MacKenzie restored the Panthers' lead.
The in-form side of the NHL proved too strong in the third period, with Corban Knight, Jonathan Huberdeau and Brandon Pirri adding to the score and condemning the Sabres to a fifth straight loss.
Western Conferences leaders the Dallas Stars suffered a third consecutive defeat after going down 6-2 to the New York Rangers.
The Stars have the best scoring record in the NHL but were undone in defence by the free-scoring Rangers, with Derek Stepan contributing with a double.
Meanwhile, the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild tied an NHL record with goals two seconds apart.
The Blue Jackets scored at 59:44 to trail 3-2 before Mikael Granlund scored at 59:46 to confirm a 4-2 Wild win.
Zach Parise finished with a hat-trick for the winners.
In other results, the Washington Capitals held on for a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins, and the Philadelphia Flyers topped the Montreal Canadiens 4-3.
An overtime goal from Artemi Panarin saw the Chicago Blackhawks defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2, a double from Drew Stafford helped the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators, while the Calgary Flames secured a 3-1 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
