Jason Kenney, a Canadian MP, had to redirect confused Twitter fans towards Olympic champion Jason Kenny's handle.

A Canadian MP was the unlikely recipient of a flood of congratulatory messages following Jason Kenny's superb victory in the men's sprint final for his fifth Olympic gold medal.

The Briton defeated compatriot Callum Skinner at Rio 2016 on Sunday to confirm his legendary standing in the velodrome.

But plenty of confused fans sent their best wishes to Calgary Midnapore MP Jason Kenney.

Kenney took the mistake in good humour and was all too happy to direct wayward followers towards the genuine Olympic champion, posting on Twitter: "Thanks for the implausible congrats on #Olympic cycling gold, but the credit goes to my infinitely more talented UK namesake @JasonKenny107."
