Phelps will go for a fifth gold of the 2016 Games in the 100 metre butterfly as the most decorated Olympian in history seeks to add to his career tally of 22.

Though Phelps will be 35 when Tokyo 2020 comes around, Lochte – a six-time gold medal winner himself – expects to see him there.

"I can definitely say [Phelps will race in Tokyo] because I guarantee he will be there," Lochte told the Today show. "I really think so. So Michael, I will see you in Tokyo."

Phelps' mother Debbie hinted at the same thing.

"That would be wonderful," she added. "I already have the race picked out."
