Ding Ning claimed a thrilling win for her first individual Olympics gold medal, taking out the women's singles.

Ding beat Li Xiaoxia, who won the encounter between the pair in the London 2012, decider, 11-9 5-11 14-12 9-11 8-11 11-7 11-7.

"I'm so excited, I can't believe I did it, I don't know how to explain my feelings right now," Ding said.

"I don't think it is possible to compare each game, but I feel like I am a lot more mature than four years ago. This is a very tough competition, and I think Li and I both did very well."

MEDAL WATCH

The United States top the medal table with 11 golds and more to come, but Great Britain were the big movers. Joe Clarke (kayak (K1) men) and divers Chris Mears and Jack Laugher (men's synchronised 3m springboard) were the gold medallists as GB took their tally to three.

COMING UP: Phelps and Lochte set for battle

Phelps has already brought up Games golds numbers 19, 20 and 21, and he may yet add to that in the men's 200m individual medley. But he will need to overcome countryman Ryan Lochte in what is one of four golds up for grabs in the pool. The men's rugby sevens gold will be decided, while the men's team sprint finals are also on.

AND FINALLY...

French gymnast Samir Ait Said suffered one of the more gruesome injuries of the Games with his broken leg.

However, he was unfortunately joined on that list by Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan.

During the men's 77kg, Karapetyan attempted a lift and saw his left elbow give away, leaving him in agony.
