Rio Recap: Katinka Hosszu, Simone Biles
- Sonny Bill Williams
QUOTES OF THE DAY
"The fact is, with the exception of a handful of players who actually played to their full strength today, the other players, unfortunately, did not play to their capacity," – assistant coach of Russia's women's water polo team, Andrei Belofastov, was not impressed with their 14-4 loss to Australia.
"If I lose at the Games, it doesn't matter. A child is the most beautiful medal. Now I just want to get a medal for her here," – two-time Olympic taekwando medallist Servet Tazegul gains motivation to succeed from his 10-month old daughter Esmira.
"Carrying home a gold on the flight back home would be out of this world. I might even wear it at my next event, the problem is with it being gold is it is kind of heavy," – Patrick Reed is already planning what he will do if he wins golfing gold for the United States.
"I have nothing to lose tomorrow. So I will go there, and I beat her the last time in Madrid so I think I will need some good tactics from that match," - Petra Kvitova is unfazed by a potential match with defending champion Serena Williams in the quarter-finals of the women's tennis singles.
"Today we witnessed the reality and harshness of the Olympics … Olympic semis are brutal [and] a number of today's results have been unexpected but that's the Olympics for you," – a difficult day on the lagoon for New Zealand is summed up by Mahe Drysdale, with Robert Manson and Christopher Harris missing out on a place in the final.
MEDAL WATCH
France claimed gold ahead of Germany - missing out on the chance to win it for a third successive Games - and Australia as the team eventing went down to the wire.
Although Germany missed out in team eventing, Michael Jung, riding Sam FBW, topped the podium in the individual event, retaining the title he won at London 2012.
COMING UP: Hosszu, Phelps and Ledecky the focus, Biles bidding for team glory
Michael Phelps will be bidding for his 20th Olympic gold medal in the men's 200m butterfly final, but Laszlo Cseh, Chad Le Clos and Tamas Kenderesi are likely to provide staunch competition.
Hosszu will be looking for her third gold of the Games in the women's 200m individual medley, while Katie Ledecky will be chasing her third medal in the 200m freestyle.
Simone Biles starred during qualification and is back in action as the USA bid for glory in the women's gymnastics team event.
AND FINALLY…
Things did not get much better for Vladislav Yakovlev on Tuesday.
After flipping his scull during the men's single repechage on Monday, the Kazakh found himself in the water once again a day later.
Yakovlev will have one more chance to get through a race without finding himself in the water on Friday.
