Ryder Cup rookie Thomas Pieters promises Europe points
Ryder Cup wildcard Thomas Pieters says he intends to deliver points for Europe after being chosen by Darren Clarke to complete the team.
Belgian Pieters will make his Ryder Cup debut alongside five other European rookies at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
The 24-year-old was one of three captain's picks, together with experienced duo Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood, announced by Clarke on Tuesday.
Asked what he hopes to bring to the team, Pieters offered a blunt response: "Points."
Winner of the Made in Denmark tournament on Sunday, he added: "I can't wait to get on that plane and be with the team.
"You try to win tournaments every week, so to do it at that point with the pressure on me was very satisfying," he said of his victory on Sunday.
"I like to let the golf do the talking. I guess I had to step it up a little bit and I've had some nice finishes."
Pieters succeeds 2012 Ryder Cup winner Nicolas Colsaerts as a Belgian representative on the European team and he has already received some tongue-in-cheek advice from his older compatriot.
"He [Colsaerts] said, 'if you make as many birdies as I did, you'll be fine'," Pieters said.
Clarke arranged to be paired with Pieters to assess the youngster during the opening round of the most recent European Tour event in Farso and was suitability impressed by the eventual winner.
"Last week I played with him, as I've done many times over the qualification period. When he teed off on Thursday morning he knew exactly why I was playing with him," Europe's captain said.
"Prior to that there were a few other contenders, but Thomas went out and played unbelievably."
