Sandow heroics secure comeback win for Warrington
Warrington Wolves moved to the top of Super League with a stunning turnaround at Salford Red Devils as Chris Sandow's excellent last-second drop-goal secured an enthralling 31-30 success.
With an hour of the game gone, Warrington trailed 30-12 at the AJ Bell Stadium as the hosts looked set to move level on points with their opponents.
But a burst of three tries in six minutes brought the scores level and, after Salford missed two attempted drop-goals, Sandow landed his from distance, the ball sailing through the posts as the hooter sounded to cap a remarkable comeback.
After trailing to Juinor Sa'u's early score, Warrington forged in front as Jack Hughes and Ben Currie went over.
But they found themselves 28-12 behind at the break as Salford hit back strongly with four more tries courtesy of Josh Jones, Greg Johnson, Logan Tomkins and a second for Sa'u.
That lead was extended further by Gareth O'Brien's penalty, before both sides were reduced to 12 men as Salford's Justin Carney was sin-binned alongside Currie following a bout of pushing and shoving.
The animosity seemed to spark Warrington into life as Ryan Atkins scored a quickfire brace, swiftly followed by an Ashton Sims try as the visitors drew level.
Michael Dobson and Robert Lui were too low with their drop-goal attempts for Salford but Sandow - having just missed a penalty from 40 metres out - knocked over his one-pointer from a similar distance to bring an end to a thrilling encounter.
