Serena Williams marked her return with a straightforward victory over Laura Siegemund in the BNP Paribas Open second round.

The American world number one, in action for the first time since her Australian Open final loss to Angelique Kerber, eased to an expected 6-2 6-1 victory at Indian Wells.

Siegemund, the German qualifier who has enjoyed a fine start to the year, was simply no match for the powerful Williams.

Williams had 21 winners and went unbroken despite serving at just 55 per cent, closing out her victory in 63 minutes.

A two-time champion of the event, Williams is aiming to win the title for the first time since 2001 ??? having made her return to Indian Wells last year.

Williams will now face Yulia Putintseva in a part of the draw decimated following the exits of numerous seeds.
