Spieth, Day climbing up leaderboard at Oakmont

Jordan Spieth and Jason Day each made up significant ground on U.S. Open leader Dustin Johnson, as round three got under way at Oakmont on Saturday.

Reigning champion Spieth and Day were respectively eight and nine shots off the pace at the halfway stage, but the top two players in the world rankings wasted little time in moving into closer contention at the start of their penultimate rounds.

Spieth carded a trio of birdies in succession from the 11th, his second hole, and Day also picked up three strokes in the space of four holes.

The former did give a shot back on the 14th, but both he and Day were ominously placed at two over, six off the pace.

Johnson had yet to play a hole on Saturday, with the USGA still playing catch-up after thunderstorms caused significant delays earlier in the week.

The leader - seeking his first major - was due to tee off at 5:01pm local time (10:01pm BST).
