The lead was extended to 17-9 when Guillaume Namy crossed for Brive, but they lost Fabien Sanconnie to a yellow card and Stade Francais took advantage as Djibril Camara and then Jeremy Sinzelle went over in quick succession.
Another yellow, this time for Namy 15 minutes from time, was punished by the boot of Steyn and in the final 10 minutes Jules Plisson's penalty and a converted Jonathan Danty score put the gloss on the scoreline for Stade Francais.
The victory moves Stade Francais up a place to 10th, while Brive remain sixth.
