Alastair Cook etched himself into the history books on Monday by becoming the first Englishman to amass 10,000 Test runs.

Having been dismissed for 15 on day one of the second Test with Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street, Cook began his side's second innings requiring just five more runs to reach the landmark. He duly completed the task in the second over of England's second innings as the hosts pursued 79 for victory.

Cook is the 12th man to compile 10,000 runs in the longest format and joins legendary names such as Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting in achieving the feat.

Here, with the help of Opta, we take a look at some of the other numbers behind Cook's 10,000:

31 - At 31 years and 157 days old, Cook is the youngest man to reach the milestone. Sachin Tendulkar was 31 years and 326 days old when he set the previous record.

229 - Cook needed 229 innings to reach 10,000 runs, making him the ninth-fastest player to the total. Brian Lara, Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara each needed 195 innings.

28 - England's skipper has made 28 hundreds in his career to date.

294 - Against India at Edgbaston in August 2011, Cook made his largest individual score of 294.

2,117 - Perhaps unsurprisingly given the frequency of England's battles with Australia, Cook has more Test runs against their Ashes rivals than any other team.

1,364 - The amount of runs recorded by Cook in 2015, his highest return of Test runs in a calendar year.

8,900 - Graham Gooch is the second-highest Test run scorer for England. His tally of 8,900 was accumulated between 1975 and 1995.
