Willie Mason has left Catalans Dragons by mutual consent with the prop ruled out for the rest of the season due to an ankle injury.

The experienced Mason, anĀ NRL Grand Final winner and former State of Origin star, joined Catalans on a one-year contract in February.

However, ankle ligament tears mean the 36-year-old will not be fit to feature again before the end of the campaign, and he has consequently parted company with the Dragons.

Catalans chief executive Christophe Jouffret said: "It is bad news to see Willie ruled out for the rest of the season with a bad injury.

"Willie had a fantastic career in the different clubs he played for and on the international stage with New South Wales, Tonga and Australia.

"He will remain among the great players who have worn the Catalans Dragons jersey. We would like to wish him all the best for the future."

Mason made 14 Super League appearances and scored one try.
