The uncapped 19-year-old, fresh from competing with the country's sevens team at Rio 2016, has joined the squad in Wellington after Ryan Crotty picked up a head knock in the All Blacks' opening 42-8 win over the weekend.

"He had a very good Super [Rugby] season and he's really someone that we see in the future that could have a long career," coach Steve Hansen said.

"But this environment I'm sure will really test him, so we'll just have to monitor that and see how he copes with it. If we think he's coping well enough with it, then he may get an opportunity. If he's not then he won't.

"What I do know is that the time being spent with us will be worthwhile. We'll get payback for it somewhere, whether in the short term or the long term."

Seta Tamanivalu, Liam Coltman, James Parsons and Damian McKenzie have also been called into the squad, with Nathan Harris (knee), Codie Taylor (head knock), Waisake Naholo (hamstring) and George Moala (knee) all out.

Meanwhile, Matt Todd has been released to Mitre 10 Cup side Canterbury.
