Puig won the first eight games against Varvara Lepchenko, en route to a 6-0 6-3 triumph in round one of the WTA Premier event.

Although Lepchenko had break points in two of Puig's service games during the first set, the American failed to take her chances and struggled badly on her own serve.

Lepchenko finally got on the board with a break in set two, but Puig soon reclaimed the advantage before sealing victory at the fourth time of asking.

Puig will now face the winner of the meeting between seventh seed Kvitova and Madison Brengle.

Monday's other main-draw contest saw Japan's number two, wildcard Naomi Osaka, get the better of the country's number one, Misaki Doi.

Osaka won 6-4 6-4 and will now face either Dominika Cibulkova or Lucie Safarova in round two.
