Tennis: Rafael Nadal forced out of Miami Open

Rafael Nadal made a shock exit from the Miami Open on Saturday, retiring due to apparent illness during the third set of his second-round match with Bosnia-Herzegovina's Damir Dzumhur.

The world number five looked set to coast through when he took the first set 6-2, despite spurning nine break points in the opening game, and then saw his opponent complain of dizziness and nausea.

However, after receiving medical attention, Dzumhur came out with renewed vigour in set two to level the match.

And it was Nadal who required the trainer ahead of the decider, the Spaniard visibly struggling to give his best in the Miami heat.

He duly threw away a 40-0 lead to fall behind in set three and called for the trainer again after Dzumhur consolidated the break.

Nadal opted to continue, but then called a halt to proceedings at 3-0 and 30-15 down, handing Dzumhur an unexpected passage to round three.

Earlier in the day, fourth seed Stan Wawrinka had gone down in straight sets to Andrey Kuznetsov.
