Goffin comeback gives Belgium early Davis Cup lead
David Goffin produced a stunning comeback in the Davis Cup final as he came from two sets down to beat Great Britain's Kyle Edmund.
The world number 16 had looked on the ropes in the opening hour in Ghent as Edmund " making his debut in the competition " raced into a 2-0 lead, but Goffin dug deep to recover and win 3-6 1-6 6-2 6-1 6-0.
Edmund's inexperience was apparent once Goffin began to gain the upper hand and the deciding set was a hugely one-sided affair, the 20-year-old Briton's confidence evidently draining with every lost point.
It was an entirely different story at the start of the contest as Edmund used his forehand to good effect, leaving his more experienced opponent struggling to compete with his unerring accuracy.
Edmund enjoyed winning streaks of five and six games in the first two sets as Great Britain looked on course to move ahead, but Goffin had other ideas and battled back in remarkable fashion.
Crucial breaks at the start of the third and fourth sets swung the contest in the favourite's favour, his previously meek groundstrokes suddenly acquiring new power and purpose.
Roared on by a partisan home crowd, Goffin concluded the contest by winning 12 consecutive games to underline his newfound dominance.
The visitors' hopes of drawing level now hinge on star player Andy Murray getting a victory over Ruben Bemelmans in Friday's second singles match.
