Tony Smith extends Warrington Wolves stay

Super League's longest-serving head coach, Tony Smith, has signed a two-year extension to his contract with leaders Warrington Wolves.

Former Great Britain and England coach Smith took charge of the Wolves in 2009 and has guided the team to three Challenge Cup triumphs.

A Super League title has so far eluded Warrington, who reached the Grand Final in 2012 and 2013, but Smith's men sit top of the table this term and are on course to improve significantly on last season's disappointing sixth-placed finish.

Smith told his club's official website: "I'm delighted and excited about the upcoming two years. I think we have been a good fit for each other as coach and club, and it's the ambition of this club that has kept me here.

"I think we have come through a period of rebuild over the last couple of years and we've got some terrific young players with experience now.

"I think some of our best times are to come and hopefully some of that will be this year; certainly into the next couple and beyond. I’m excited to be part of it."

Wolves chief executive Roger Draper, who has also extended his contract, added: "We are delighted that Tony has renewed his contract. He has established Warrington Wolves for its exciting playing style, continues his commitment to young players and has the ability to bring top-class players to the club."

Warrington host Wigan Warriors on Thursday in a meeting of Super League's top two.
