The 2012 Olympic bronze medallist was unable to take to the podium after he was helped into a wheelchair following a race, which was staged in the heat on Saturday.

The Briton, who will attempt to win another Olympic medal in Rio in August, said warm temperatures took their toll in his first race of the season.

He tweeted: "I am out for dinner now. The Ozzie heat is too much for a Yorkshire man! Can't remember the last 1 km. Tough day. Thanks for the messages."

Spaniard Mario Mola showed a great turn of pace to claim a third consecutive win ahead of compatriot Fernando Alarza.

Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee, Jonny's older brother, finished 36th in his first race since undergoing ankle surgery last year.
