The accident occurred around 1 pm when the boat, which was on its way to Yeji from Nantwekope capsized after hitting a tree stamp.

At least 25 people, including children have died when a boat carrying about 60 people capsized on the Volta Lake on Sunday, May 29, 2016.

Mr John Kpelli, Secretary of the Yeji Boat Owners Association said a rescue team made up of police personnel and naval officers were notified.
He said the team were able to retrieve five of the dead bodies on their arrival at the scene.
Some survivors were also brought offshore, with several bodies later being discovered.
