Vonn elated to secure record FIS World Cup globe

Lindsey Vonn was delighted to put her disappointment from Friday behind her in La Thuile as she wrapped up the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup downhill globe 24 hours later.

Vonn failed to finish on the first event in Italy as her ski came off after hitting some icy patches, the American sliding out of contention.

There were no such problems on Saturday, though, as she completed the course in one minute 24.94 seconds to take second place behind Nadia Fanchini.

The 80 points collected ensured Vonn claimed a record eighth downhill title, seeing her reclaim the overall lead from Lara Gut.

"It's nice to be able to get the World Cup globe before the finals and it was also good for my self-confidence," Vonn, who was won 20 titles in total, said.

"You know, I was a little bit unsure of myself after yesterday and it's kind of hard sometimes to trust everything and I did that today.

"I charged, I attacked, and it wasn't perfect skiing, but I'm really happy with my second place.

"I couldn't see the time [when I crossed the line], so I was a little confused about what place I was in, but I was really happy.

"I kind of was more relieved that I made it down than really concerned about what place I was in and, yes, it was hard maybe to see my emotions, but I was definitely happy and relieved at the same time."
