Vonn had earned a record eighth downhill title - and 20th crystal globe - at the same venue on Saturday, despite finishing second to home favourite Nadia Fanchini.

The American had to settle for third place in the super-G, 0.07 seconds behind main rival Gut.

Yet both Vonn and Gut were more than half a second adrift of the impressive Weirather, who recorded a time of one minute and 17.73 seconds to claim her first World Cup win this season and fifth in total.

Gut now trails Vonn by 79 points in the super-G standings, with Weirather a further 75 points back in third.

The battle between the top two for the overall crystal globe is even tighter, Gut closing to within 23 of Vonn's 1,200-point tally.
