Widnes Vikings end eight-game losing streak

Corey Thompson and Joe Mellor both scored twice as Widnes Vikings ended their eight-game losing streak in Super League on Sunday with a stunning comeback against Huddersfield Giants, recovering from 16-0 down to win 24-20.

Widnes fell behind when Nathan Mason went over for the visitors, then a horrible error at let in Danny Brough to run the length of the pitch to score and Joe Wardle added a third try.

Kevin Brown set up Thompson to get Widnes on the board late in the first half before Mellor crossed five minutes after the restart and Rhys Hanbury kicked the conversion to reduce the deficit to six points.

Stefan Marsh's 50th Super League try moved Widnes even closer and the scores would have been level had Hanbury not failed to add the extras.

That missed kick was soon forgotten, however, as Thompson's brilliant second try put the hosts in front, with Mellor then darting underneath the posts to make it 24 unanswered points for Widnes.

Jermaine McGillvary crossed to stop the rot for Huddersfield, but Brough missed the conversion and Widnes held on to move four points clear of the Super League's bottom four, while Huddersfield's miserable season continues as they remain second bottom.
