Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane fears Michael McIlorum will miss six months of action through injury.

McIlorum was taken from the field on a stretcher after sustaining a suspected broken ankle during the Warriors' 42-12 defeat to Brisbane Broncos in Saturday's World Club Series fixture at the DW Stadium.

The hooker fell awkwardly during a challenge with Anthony Milford and team-mate Ben Flower and was taken to a hospital in Manchester for assessment.

"Micky could be out for six months," Wane told BBC Radio 5live.

"He's playing rugby league and these things happen."

McIlorum had been hoping to impress Broncos coach Wayne Bennett, who was chosen as Steve McNamara's successor for the England head coach role this month.
