Woman with the world's longest eyelashes breaks Guinness record

The woman, You Jianxia has lashes that reach all the way down from her eyelids past her mouth.

Scientists say that an average person’s eyelashes should be between 0.8 and 1.2 cm-long, but the hairs growing on the edges of this woman’s eyelids reach a whopping 12.4 cm, and that’s almost 5 inches long.

The woman from China has broken the world record for the longest eyelashes in the world.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Shanghai's You Jianxia has lashes that reach all the way down from her eyelids past her mouth. The whisker-like hairs are so long that she can even hold them together.

The 49-year-old woman has never trimmed her eyelashes or gotten extensions.

She explained that she only started noticing her eyelid hairs getting longer after retiring from her job as the chairman of a multi-million dollar investment fund, in 2013, and becoming closer to nature, where she dedicated herself to gardening and creating over 1,600 rose varieties.

Instead of being put off by the unusual growth rate of her lashes, Jianxia said she is so proud of them and takes great care not to break them off by accident.

“Long eyelashes are a wonderful thing, they symbolize health and longevity,” You Jianxia said.

“They are part of my body and I always look after them, washing my face gently so not to damage them by accident.”
